INSTALLATION
Local building codes vary between each State and Territory, so be sure to check local building requirements before you start work. If you are unsure, consult a qualified engineer.
General tips
- Tiles should be fixed in a brick pattern, avoiding the alignment of joints.
- Start with corners first and work from the ground up.
- The rear surface of the tile should be clean and free from dust.
- Keep an eye on the level as you go.
- Apply a generous amount of adhesive to the tile including edges.
- Bed the stone firmly into position to ensure no voids remain between the tiles and substrate.
- Remove any excess adhesive.
- Grouting is not required and not recommended.
- If installing in a hot and dry climate, or onto very dry substrates, wet the stone and the substrate first so that they don’t absorb moisture from the adhesive. A light spray is adequate—allow excess water to run off.
Sealing
Stone Emporium’s natural stone cladding will age over time if left unsealed, and dependant on weather conditions. Sealing is recommended for water features or consistently wet areas.
Adhesive
Use a high quality adhesive. Ardex Abaflex adhesive is recommended.
Waterproofing
Use Cemcote cement based waterproof coating or an equivalent.
Substrate
The substrate must be rigid and free from dust, debris and loose particles. The substrate must be able to carry the weight of the stone. If in doubt, check with the substrate manufacturer. Concrete walls must be fully cured and any foreign matter, including oils, chemicals and dust removed. This must be enforced to allow the adhesive to bond with the substrate.
